EU-funded POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS:

Bioinformatics analysis of the Fusarium ear blight-wheat interaction

Applications are invited for 2 postdoctoral fellowships in the group of Kim Hammond-Kosack studying Fusarium ear blight and mycotoxin control in Europe’s Cereal Crops. Our studies employ a wide range of techniques from plant pathology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, wheat genetics and functional genomics (http://www.iacr.ac.uk/ppi/wptop.html).

One post-doc fellow will be in charge of the bioinformatics analysis of the plant’s response to Fusarium ear blight infection in both susceptible and resistant wheat cultivars. The second post–doc will be in charge of the bioinformatics analysis of the Fusarium graminearum genes expressed in planta, during the invasion of susceptible and resistant wheat cultivars.

Both posts will take advantage of Monsanto’s proprietary wheat EST collection and transcriptome profiling data sets, specifically generated for these project. In addition, there are growing public wheat ESTs collections and in 2003 the entire F. graminearum genome will be sequenced at the Whitehead Institute, Boston, USA.

Candidates should have a strong background in bioinformatics and molecular biology. An interest in fungal biology/host-pathogen interactions is desirable but not essential. Collaboration and teamwork are essential to this position. Candidates should also show excellent interpersonal skills.

The work will be based in the new Centenary laboratory at Rothamsted Research, with access to first class molecular and analytical facilities, bioimaging, controlled environments and new glasshouses.

Eligible candidate for these 2 posts must be under 35 years of age, have obtained their Ph. D. degree within the last 5 years, hold a European passport and have not worked previously in the UK. Applications, including a detailed CV, a brief summary of research interests, the names and addresses of three referees, should be addressed to Dr Kim Hammond-Kosack, Rothamsted Research, Plant-Pathogen Interaction Division, Harpenden, Hertfordshire, AL5 2QJ, UK. Tel 44(0) 1582 763133 Ext 2240, Fax 44(0) 1582 715009. E. mail kim.hammond-kosack@bbsrc.ac.uk.

Rothamsted Research is situated 30 Km north of London, England and has excellent links to the major motorway, rail and air routes. This government institute with approximately 500 staff undertakes basic and strategic research on sustainable plant-based agriculture and the environment.

Both positions are available April 2003-March 2005 and are funded under EU Framework V.
