SEQUENCE RETRIEVAL SYSTEM
Developed at different successive institutions.
- 1990 - Started by Thure Etzold, at the EMBL.
- 1997 - EBI (Cambridge), financed in part by EMBnet.
- 1998 - Lion Biosciences.
It is not a database. It is a data warehouse. SRS uses flat text file versions of many databases: EMBL, Swiss-Prot, MEDLINE, HTML, XML files, etc., which are copied and indexed, to allow the connection of related information from several databases.
There are many mirrors installed. The most popular is, probably, the one at the EBI.
With this system, SRS offers access to more than 700 databases.
