Description: | Gram-negative bacterium living in dilute aquatic environments.
Invariably differentiates and divides asymmetrically at each cell
cycle. The stalked bacterium adheres to solid surfaces via a
holdfast produced at the tip of the stalk.
The stalked cell acts like a stem cell, continually giving rise to a new swarmer motile cell at each division. The motile cell has a single polar flagellum. After the period of motility, the flagellum is released and the stalk develops. The swarmer cell is unable to initiate chromosome replication until it differentiates into a stalked cell. |
Properties: | Number of membranes : 2 Presence of a flagella : Yes Number of inteins : 0 |
