Description: | Gram-negative meningococcal bacterium. Causes life-threatening invasive
bacterial infections especially in young infants. Opportunistic
pathogen that colonizes the nasopharynges and oropharynges of
asymptomatic carriers, they occasionally gain access to the blood and
to the cerebrospinal fluid to cause meningitis and septicemia.
Strains from serogroup A are responsible for major epidemics and pandemics of meningococcal disease. |
