Description:Gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium that grows in soil, marshes and coastal marine habitats, as well on plants and animal tissues. It forms biofilms on wet surfaces such as those of rocks and soil. The emergence of P.aeruginosa as a major opportunistic human pathogen during the past century may be a consequence of its resistance to the antibiotics and disinfectants that eliminate other environmental bacteria. P.aeruginosa is now a significant source of bacteraemia in burn victims, urinary-tract infections and hospital-acquired pneumonia in patients. It is also the predominant cause of morbidity and mortality in cystic fibrosis patients.

Almost all strains are motile by means of a single polar flagellum, and some strains have two or three flagella.

P.aeruginosa is a nonfermentative aerobe that derives its energy from oxidation rather than fermentation of carbohydrates. Although able to use more than 75 different organic compounds, it can grow on media supplying only acetate for carbon and ammonium sulfate for nitrogen.

Most strains of P aeruginosa produce one or more pigments, the most common being pyocyanin (a phenazine pigment).
