Description: | Gram-positive nonmotile coccus that grows in aerobic and anaerobic
conditions, in which it forms grape-like clusters.
S.epidermidis is a common member of the normal florae of skin and
mucous membranes. Its large numbers and ubiquitous distribution make
it one of the most commonly isolated organisms in the clinical
laboratory.
It is now one of the most important agents of hospital acquired
infections. Immunosuppressed or neutropenic patients are
particularly at risk, as are individuals with indwelling catheters
or prosthetic devices.
