Description:Gram-positive, nonmotile, nonsporeforming coccus that occurs in chains or in pairs of cells. Individual cells are round-to-ovoid cocci, 0.6-1.0 micrometer in diameter. It is a catalase-negative aerotolerant anaerobe (facultative anaerobe). It requires enriched medium containing blood in order to grow. It has a capsule composed of hyaluronic acid. Its genome has low G+C content.

Serotpye M3 strains are a common cause of severe invasive infections with unusually high rates of morbidity and mortality. The strain MGAS315 has been isolated from a patient with streptococcal toxic shock syndrome.

Properties:Number of membranes : 1
Presence of a flagella : No
Number of inteins : 0
