Database Description

IMGT, the international ImMunoGeneTics database, created in 1989 by Marie-Paule Lefranc (UniversitÈ Montpellier II, CNRS, Montpellier, France), is a high-quality integrated information system specialising in Immunoglobulins (IG), T cell receptors (TR) and Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) molecules of human and other vertebrates. The IMGT information system comprise expertly annotated data and consists of databases ("IMGT sequence databases"), Web resources ("IMGT Marie-Paule page"), and interactive tools. The IMGT sequence databases include : IMGT/LIGM-DB, a comprehensive database of more than 46000 IG and TR sequences from human and from 104 other vertebrate species (august 2001), with translation for fully annotated sequences, created by LIGM, Montpellier, France, and IMGT/HLA-DB, a database of 1200 human MHC allele sequences, developed by ICRF and ANRI, UK. The "IMGT Marie-Paule page" comprises the "IMGT Repertoire", the global Web Resource in ImMunoGeneTics for the Immunoglobulins and T cell Receptors of human and other vertebrates, based on the "IMGT Scientific chart", and "IMGT Bloc-notes ", a selection of useful links for immunology, genetics, molecular biology and bioinformatics. "IMGT/V-QUEST" is an integrated software for sequence alignment and analysis of IG and TR. The "IMGT/Collier de Perles" tool provides 2D representations of the IG and TR domains. Since July 1995, IMGT has been available on the web at http://imgt.cines.fr. IMGT provides researchers and clinicians with a common access to all nucleotide, protein, genetic and structural immunogenetics data. This information is of high value for medical research, veterinary research, biotechnology related to antibody and T cell receptor engineering, genome diversity and evolution studies.

Recent Developments

"IMGT/GeneView", "IMGT/LocusView" and "IMGT/GeneSearch" provide a convivial interface for the query and results from the IMGT genome databases. A new tool "IMGT/JunctionAnalysis" analyses the junctions of the rearranged immunoglobulin and T cell receptor genes in human and mouse. All IMGT human immunoglobulin and T cell receptor genes have been approved by HUGO in 1999 and links have been made between IMGT and GDB and LocusLink (NCBI).

IMGT is funded by the European Union's 5th PCRDT programme QLG2-2000-01287, the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique), the MinistËre de l'Education Nationale and the MinistËre de la Recherche.
