Database Description

ooTFD represents the TFD transcription factors database, which was initiated in 1990, maintained as an object database. An external mapping tables database has also been used to represent relationships between transcription factor entities represented in this database and entities represented in other databases including EPD, PKR, and PDB. Mappings between ooTFD and PDB allow queries that identify and display relationships between transcription factor entities and solved protein structures. Transcription factor features data structures store information about sequence homologies to existing PDB entries, as well as posttranslational modifications, such as phosphorylation, which should improve the utility of this resource in investigating known and potential molecular signalling interactions. Automated updating mechanisms have also been developed to allow new entries to the sites and polypeptides classes. The web accessible interface, which is currently based on the ozone object database system, allows predefined transcription factor queries, and sequence analysis services are available that allow transcription factor binding site searches. These query and retrieval systems can suggest new hypotheses, potential drug targets, or downstream regulatory effects of signalling interactions. ooTFD and associated resources are accessible through http://www.ifti.org/ .
