In recent years much attention has been brought to the role of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). Initially the non-coding RNAs have been recognized as RNA polymerase II transcripts, expressing all characteristics of mRNA (cap, poly-A tail) but apparently lacking long open reading frames. Now, the term non-coding RNA is widely used to describe almost any regulatory RNA regardless of the mRNA characteristics. The ncRNA database is a collection of nucleotide sequences of several classes of non-coding RNAs that have been identified in eukaryotes as well as in prokaryotes. The database is available on-line at http://biobases.ibch.poznan.pl/ncRNA/
