Database Description

One emerging area of RNA research is the study of noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs). These transcripts lack significant open reading frames and encode RNA as their final product. An interesting characteristic of many ncRNAs is their kingdom-specificity. PLANTncRNAs is a database specially dedicated to plant ncRNAs. This database is not only a repository for known or predicted plant ncRNA sequences, it also includes summaries with prominent characteristics for each gene, such as gene expression and associated mutant phenotypes. Arabidopsis transcripts in particular are also linked to complete transcript profiles with information from more than 200 microarray experiments deposited in public databases. The number of ncRNAs from plants is expected to grow exponentially in the near future, due to the increasing number of plant genomes that are being sequenced. Our database should contribute to this rapidly advancing area of plant biology by offering a centralized repository of data that connects sequence records with information of biological significance.
