Database Description

The small RNA database is a compilation of small size RNA sequences from both prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. The database is updated with sequences submitted on the World Wide Web. Since our last update, 36 new sequences have been added. Small RNAs are broadly defined as the RNAs not directly involved in protein synthesis. Their size varies from tens to hundreds of nucleotides long, with some of the yeast small RNAs being over one thousand nucleotides long. Our database includes nuclear, nucleolar, cytoplasmic and mitochondrial small RNA sequences from eukaryotic organisms and small RNAs from prokaryotic cells as well as viruses. Sequences from various sources covered in our earlier compilations and at other specialized databases are not included in this update. Following is an update of small RNA sequences published since our last compilation (Oct 1999): - U5 snRNA from Trypanosoma brucei (AF179402) - U2 snRNA from Papio hamadryas anubis (AF147270) - Partial U2 snRNA sequences of about 34 polychaete species (AF185197-AF185230) are also available.
