Database Description

We made a full-length enriched cDNA library from the erythrocytic stage parasites of Plasmodium falciparum 3D7 strain, the causative agent of the lethal malaria in humans. One pass reading of 5' end of 2490 clones were compared with complete sequences of chromosomes 2 and 3, and large contigs from chromosomes 1, 4, 5, 10-12, and 14 using PlasmoDB. It revealed that these clones included 251 full sequences of 498 independent genes (50.4%). The average length of 5'UTR was 345 nt, which is much longer than that of human 125 nt. Start sites of the redundant clones were dispersedly distributed, suggesting that it is a general rule in this organism. In addition to the analysis of the expression of genes, this library will be a useful resource for the development of vaccine and medicine.

Recent Developments

~5000 sequences were newly determined and included in the database. Plasmid clones which correspond to the 2490 sequences are deposited at MR4.
