Database Description

The Mouse Genome Database (MGD) is the public, community resource representing the genetics, genomics and phenotypes of the laboratory mouse. MGD focuses on the representation of genotype (sequence) to phenotype information including highly-curated information about genes and gene products. Primary foci of integration are though representations of relationships between genes, sequences, and phenotypes. The annotation pipeline includes extensive curation of the scientific literature. All annotations in MGD are supported with experimental evidence and citations. MGD provides official nomenclature for mouse genes and works closely with the human and rat genome annotation groups to curate relationships between these genomes and to standardize representation of genes and gene families. MGD provides curated homology data for mammalian orthologs, alleles and targeted mutation reports, and detailed mapping data. MGD provides graphical views of comparative genomic data from the gene, chromosomal region, genome, or species perspective. Extensive experimental mapping data including genetic and physical maps are available including data that conflicts with current consensus map positions. MGD is a member of the GeneOnotology (GO) consortium and uses the GO ontologies and mouse anatomical and phenotype ontologies to annotate molecular information. The alleles and phenotypes section of MGD seeks to represent mouse variants and disease models with associated genotype information and phenotypic characteristics in a robust yet easily searchable format. A major effort is underway to create a structured, controlled vocabulary to describe phenotypic abnormalities in the mouse. This vocabulary will facilitate computational data curation and mining and will support the extensive use of the mouse as a premier model for the study of human disease. MGD is part of the larger Mouse Genome Informatics project based at The Jackson Laboratory that includes the Gene Expression Database (GSD) and the Mouse Genome Sequencing (MGS) project. MGD curators work closely with other data-providers such as SWISS-PROT and LocusLink to provide a consensus, curated representation of the genome and biology of the laboratory mouse. Community data submissions encouraged.
