Description: | Gram-negative straight rods. They are motile by peritrichous flagella
or nonmotile, facultatively anaerobic chemoorganotrophic organisms
with a both respiratory and fermentative metabolism.
E.coli is an important component of the biosphere. It colonizes the lower gut of animals and survives when released to the natural environment, allowing widespread dissemination to new hosts. Pathogenic E.coli strains are responsible for infection of the enteric, urinary, pulmonary and nervous systems. Strain K12 is used in labs because it has been maintained with minimal genetic manipulation, having only been cured of the temperate bacteriophage lambda and F plasmid. |
Properties: | Number of membranes : 2 Presence of a flagella : Yes Number of inteins : 0 |
